One Day Surgery and Recover at Home with a New Knee or New Hip

Same-day or outpatient joint replacement surgery is on the rise in the United States. Predictions are by 2027 over 50% of joint replacements will be done as an outpatient.

What is Outpatient Joint Replacement?
Total joint replacement performed in an outpatient facility, not in a hospital, has become much more common. It is a safe and cost effective for appropriately selected patients. A majority of hip and knee replacement patients go home the same day as their surgery.  Depending on several factors, you may be eligible to have your total hip or total knee replacement done in an outpatient facility.

Leading-Edge Joint Replacement Care at Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists offering patients the comfort and convenience of an outpatient facility combined with the expertise of fellowship-trained surgeons and nationally recognized success rates.

Why is Outpatient Hip and Knee Replacement on the Rise?
Patients are normally discharged the same day as their surgery, which allows them to recover in the comfort of their own home. If patients are not ready or not comfortable going home the same day of their surgery, they will stay in our Care Suites overnight until they are ready, the next day, to be discharged to home. Research shows that by healing at home patients experience fewer complications, including a lower infection rate.

Why consider having an outpatient hip and knee replacement with SOS?
The Specialists’ One-Day Surgery Center (SODS)  is one of the largest ambulatory surgery centers in the Northeast. Over 15,000 surgical cases and procedures are performed each year and the center is proud to have an infection rate of less than 0.03%. This average is significantly lower than both the hospital national average and also beats the national ambulatory surgery center average. In spring of 2019, a new and expanded location opened and gave SOS surgeons the capability to do things that were previously only available to patients in hospital settings.  Hospitals treat patients with a variety of aliments including infectious diseases. Since we are an orthopedic only facility, there is far less chance of diseases spreading between patients.

SOS has been performing outpatient total hip and knee replacement surgeries since the beginning of 2018. In 2021, over 1500 total joint replacements were performed at the Specialists’ One-Day Surgery Center. SOS surgeons are known for their expert care and their exceptional results.

How do I know if I am a candidate?
Patients who are in good general health, do not smoke, are motivated and have a good support team at home are the best candidates. Those who qualify are given special education on their recovery, which must be followed closely. SOS joint replacement specialists perform a thorough evaluation of each patient’s individual circumstance in order to determine their eligibility for outpatient hip or knee replacement surgery.

Has the COVID-19 pandemic changed any procedures at the surgery center?
At the Specialists’ One-Day Surgery Center, our safety measures have always been above and beyond. With the COVID-19 pandemic, we are taking even further steps to ensure the safest environment possible.

  • Requiring all patients to take a COVID-19 test before their surgery date and rescheduling to a later date for anyone who tests positive.

  • Screening all patients and employees for symptoms of coronavirus or other respiratory illnesses, including screening for fever.

  • Not allowing any visitors in the building.

  • Practicing social distancing.

  • Requiring PPE for everyone within our facility.

  • Enhanced cleaning measures.
