Neck & Back Pain Myths and Reality

man with back pain

3 NECK & BACK MYTHS THAT HAVE BEEN DEBUNKED BY OUR PHYSICIANS.

Myth 1: A hot bath reduces back inflammation.
Reality: A hot bath can increase the inflammatory response in an acute injury. It is better to apply ice to an injury for 15 minutes during the first 72 hours after the injury. However, chronic pain not accompanied by inflammation can be eased with a hot bath or hot pack.

Myth 2: It's best to lie down until the pain goes away.
Reality: Lying down until the pain goes away can work against you and may even slow healing. Those who stay active with modified activities can recover more quickly.

Myth 3: Most back pain eventually requires surgery.
Reality: Most back problems are treated with non-operative measures, such as activity modification, anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy. Activity modifications typically include avoiding twisting motions, prolonged sitting and heavy lifting.
