'Tis the Season...to Avoid Back Aches!

how to avoid back aches this holiday season wrapping presents

‘Tis the season for the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Shopping, wrapping, decorating, and traveling keeps everyone busy, but SOS reminds people to celebrate the season safely. The stress of holidays can make our bodies more prone to aches and injuries. Be certain to get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, and follow some general guidelines to enjoy festive times with family and friends.

How to Avoid Back Aches This Holiday Season

  • Make decorating a group activity to share the work of carrying and hanging trees and decorations. To avoid back pain, don’t lift too much at one time and use proper form when lifting. Keep your feet shoulder width apart and bend from your knees, not from your back. When using a ladder, always have a spotter.
  • When shopping, avoid carrying heavy shopping bags for long stretches of time and wear supportive shoes.
  • Be careful when wrapping gifts – sit at a table or desk and bear in mind posture. Place packages and gifts under the tree or out of the walkway, and keep walkways clear and well lit.
  • Slippery winter conditions require shoes with good traction. Opt for non-slip soles and avoid wearing heels when navigating icy paths.
  • If you’re traveling, take breaks to walk and stretch your back. A lumbar support pillow can also help keep your journey pain free. When flying, pack lightly and use luggage with wheels to avoid carrying heavy bags on your shoulders.
