As Memorial Day ushers in the unofficial start of the summer season, the team at Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists (SOS) will take time along with their fellow Americans to honor the ultimate sacrifice of the men and women who died in service to our nation. It's a day of remembrance and enjoyment, but SOS encourages all that safety should remain a priority to ensure a fun and accident-free holiday.
When the parades and tributes end, summer celebrations begin, and Central New Yorkers begin to enjoy many outdoor activities after a long winter. The switch from a sedentary season to a more active one comes with a higher risk of injury. Injuries can occur at any time during sports, recreational activities, or yard work and home improvement projects. There is a risk of acute injury, but repetitive use and movements in activities can also lead to pulled muscles and overall fatigue, leaving joints vulnerable to injury.
SOS orthopedic surgeons and medical providers agree people should be cautious and take preventative measures when participating in their favorite summer pastime. Some general tips for a safe summer include:
• Warm up properly before activity by stretching to improve the muscles' ability to contract and perform.
• Cool down after any sport or exercise toto help your heart rate ease and muscles relax.
• Drink plenty of fluids to keep your body hydrated.
• Wear footwear appropriate to the activity for support and stability.
• Wear appropriate equipment, including gloves, protective pads, mouth guards, and helmets.
• Know and abide by the rules of any sport for safe play.
• Always inspect ground conditions for uneven terrain (holes, divots), glass, and other debris.
• Assess weather conditions before beginning outdoor activity.
• Wear sunscreen, a hat, and light, protective clothing.
If despite all precautions, an injury occurs, SOS PLUS After Hours Care is available to treat patients with acute orthopedic conditions. SOS Plus, a walk-in orthopedic medical clinic for urgent injuries, is located at 5719 Widewaters Parkway in Dewitt open weekdays from 12:45-4PM, and 5-8:30PM; and weekends from 9AM-1PM. SOS Plus will be closed Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
