Common Back Pain Culprits

Many people experience some type of back pain or discomfort through their lifetime. While many patients experience chronic back pain that endures over time and need regular care, some back pain can be debilitating.  The Neck & Back specialists at SOS offer a few causes of back pain that can be easily remedied:

POOR POSTURE

Your back supports weight best when you don't slouch. Sit with good lumbar support for your lower back, shoulders back, with feet resting on a low stool. When standing, keep weight evenly balanced on both feet.

WORKOUT WOES

Overdoing it at the gym or sports field is one of the most common causes of overextended muscles leading to low back pain. Weekend warriors are especially vulnerable if they remain inactive during the workweek and then spend hours at the gym or softball field on the weekend.

HEAVY PURSES OR BAGS

Although you may wear your purse, backpack, or briefcase over your shoulder, it is the lower back that supports the upper body -- including any additional weight you carry. An overstuffed bag can strain the lower back, especially if you carry it day after day. If you must tote a heavy load, consider switching to a wheeled bag.

JOB STRESS

If your job involves lifting, pulling, or anything that twists the spine, it may contribute to back pain. However, sitting at a desk all day comes with risks of its own, especially if your workstation isn’t ergonomically correct.

DEMANDING DRIVING

Driving involves sitting, often for extended periods of time, which can lead to stiff, sore muscles. This can lead to lower back pain, and twisting the neck to check traffic can aggravate. Make sure your car seat is in an appropriate position for you, keep good posture while driving and take breaks to stretch.

Many cases of back pain resolve without medical help, but with careful attention and home treatment. Pain can usually be addressed with (over-the-counter painkillers. Resting is helpful, but should not usually last more than a couple of days. Too much rest may actually be counterproductive.  People with lasting, chronic pain should consult their doctor for proper care.
